Therapeutic yoga classes include structural yoga therapy, joint opening sequences, breathing exercises, relaxation and gentle asana (posture) work. These are great for stress relief, arthritic joints, pain management and lower fitness levels. They focus on the use of breath and gentle movement to increase space and provide physical and psychological benefits.
Dynamic classes extend the focus on the breath into working with more dynamic movements. These will include more standing asana and increased focus on working toward integrating postures into a flowing vinyasa (sequence). We will focus on a small number of vinyasa and focus on initially understanding the individual asana then integrating them into a flowing sequence.
Core strength classes focus specifically on core strength and stability encouraging us to work from the deeper layers of core muscles that provide support & strength to encourage better postural habits and improved functional stability.
Hot yoga classes are Vinyasa Flow classes practised in a warmer environment of usually above 25C. This allows us to work deeper into muscles warmed and loosened by the heat. It also encourages more sweating out of toxins so please bring and drink adequate fluids and bring a towel.
Specific pregnancy (pre natal) yoga classes and baby yoga classes are at the studio (Monday evenings & Tuesday mornings) with Ceri from the Beautiful Birth Company.
There is also an acupuncturist available in the building. Rachel Millsted can be contacted on 07967 10 50 85 or her website is available at acu-works.co.uk
Students are encouraged to work to their own individual level and listen & encourage a positive attitude to their body. They are suitable for all abilities although please note the levels for guidance as to the strength of classes. All classes involve focus on the breath and it's benefits in creating space and direction in the body. Students are encouraged to work within their individual capacity and not to be competitive on the mat. The classes are primarily for the students benefit and therefore suggestions, concerns and ideas are welcomed in discussion with the teacher. The teacher may gently physically adjust students & any concerns about this should be discussed prior to class.
The general structure of all classes will include
- Introduction to the theme of the class. This may involve a short breathing/ relaxation exercise
- Posture work; including strengthening, toning, relaxing, and joint opening postures.
- Some postures are specifically practiced to encourage stress relief, good digestion, detox. This will depend upon the students and the class theme
- Relaxation/ meditation sequence lasting between 5 and 15 minutes. This calms the body and mind. Please bring warm clothing and/or blankets for this.
- Students are encouraged throughout to work with their breath. Breath awareness is a vital part of yoga practice and can be used to assist posture work as well as relaxation. Breath awareness will be taught using simple posture work and within the practice.
- Students should be aware that class content may vary and this will be indicated on booking/ in the timetable.
Equipment
This can be provided although it is preferred that students provide their own mat. Specific equipment for particular classes such as blocks/ bolsters, straps will be provided when necessary although students are again encouraged to have these for personal practice.
Adjustment
It should be noted that the method of teaching used involves physical adjustment by the teacher. This can assist in alignment and understanding as well as reduce injury. However if students are not comfortable with this they should notify the teacher at the beginning of the class.
Clothing
Please wear appropriate clothing for classes which should allow easy movement. Layering can be useful as certain posture sequences will increase body heat. Practice is carried out barefoot. Please bring warm clothing/ blanket for relasation and yin yoga classes.
